Sinus tarsi syndrome / talocrural joint synovitis

Description

Sinus tarsi syndrome, or scientifically talocrural joint synovitis, can occur with the impingement of the cervical ligament and the interosseous talocalcaneal ligament found within the sub-talar joint. Patients will report anterior-lateral ankle pain – with an increase in severity over prolonged periods of weight bearing.

Keys to effective sinus tarsi management:

Most patients with sinus tarsi syndrome will present with a flexible, planus foot type. As such, the key to effective management is an adequate rearfoot varus posting and full MLA contour – ensuring the suspected supinutus is removed during your 3D scanning.

With effective offloading, sinus tarsi syndrome should settle quickly and reoccurrence is small when wearing orthotics.
