About Lesson

Plantar Grind

Plantar Grind is a manual adjustment made to the plantar surface of a Machined EVA orthosis. Material is removed from the plantar surface of the midfoot region to allow for improved shoe fit.

The depth of a Plantar Grind is greatest at the medioplantar aspect and gradually tapers to minimal depth at the lateroplantar aspect of a Machined EVA orthosis.

The image below shows an orthosis before a Plantar Grind has been applied.

Pre plantar grind.

The Plantar Grind depth can be measured by a technician and material can be removed with an EVA bench grinder.

Post plantar grind.

Measuring the required depth for a Plantar Grind can be difficult. The best method is to remove the existing insole from the footwear and measure the distance from the ground to the plantar midfoot region using a measuring wedge.
